JAKE & TUFFY REVIEWS

It is an honour to write on behalf of Dr.Zafrullah Chowdhury.
It is also my pleasure to write to you and introduce myself. I joined as coordinator at Gonoshasthaya Kendra last year after I retire from Govt.Education Cadre in place of Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury who served Gk as coordinator for more than 35(thirty-five) years. He decided to dedicate himself as General Practitioner cum Surgical Specialists in the distant remote areas of chars of Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.

Thank you very much for sending the Jake & Tuffy storybook. I have gone through the book and I am very much impressed. The principle of the story itself is well presented, pictures and over all getup of the book is excellent. People will be attracted to read it. After reading the book I feel that it should be translated into Bengali so that the people of Bangladesh and Bengali speaking people of other country can share the excellence of the book. Dr. Zafrullah is also very much interested in producing a Bangla version of it.

Thank you very much for submitting the Jake & Tuffy books to our section. We were very impressed by the content and high standard of the book. It is the type of book that we would like to see in all our school libraries, because it covers such an important topic in a very sensitive way.

This serves to commend to you, for your consideration, Ray Lacey’s ‘Jake and Tuffy’ story book.
There are relatively few illustrated story books that come on the market for younger readers, dealing with the challenges of HIV & AIDS death and dying. This is somewhat surprising, given the extent of the problem.
There are even fewer that are of a high quality (I can think of only one other).
The book is equally useful for (and enjoyed by) adults who might use the book to mediate to affected children. The book has depth and intelligence beyond that which initially meets the eye, and fills a gap much-needed in providing psycho-social support for children who must face a reality filled with challenges not of their own making.

REVIEW OF ‘ JAKE & TUFFY’
The story is very interesting and carries through a powerful message of how kids can cope with the loss of a parent through illness.
In my opinion, the book complies with Curriculum requirements for both English First Additional Language and Life Skills for Foundation Phase learners. Teachers can adapt the story for Home Language learners etc. A number of activities could be done by learners based on the story including discussion, dramatization and drawing. The language is age appropriate for young learners and suits a variety of contexts where learners may be First or Second language speakers of English.
The context and setting of the book makes it possible for a wide variety of learners to relate to the story and the ending is appropriate for young learners who always prefer a story with a happy ending.

The use of this book in schools would contribute towards combatting the discrimination that is so0metimes experienced by orphans. The use of a memory box is very therapeutic for both the affected child and other relatives that may be playing a supporting role to any child going through the trauma of losing a parent.
I would not hesitate to recommend the book for schools as part of the advocacy on loss and bereavement and on and how to deal with its consequences positively.
